With a population of about 1,700,000 citizens, Hamburg in Northern Germany is Germany's second largest city. Is located at three rivers, the Alster, the Bille and the Elbe that flows into the North Sea about 110 km away.
The harbour of Hamburg is the third largest harbour in Europe. Due to its closeness to the sea and world-wide importance of the harbour, Hamburg is also regarded as "Gate to the World" ("Tor zur Welt"). In Hamburg, there are more than 2,500 bridges, which is more than Venice, Amsterdam and London have together. This location at the water of course influences the atmosphere of the city as well as the people to a large extent.
