Hamburg Churches: St. Nikolai

The church St. Nikolai near the city center of Hamburg also is one of the main churches. Unfortunately, this huge cathedral of Gothic style was destroyed in the "Great Fire" in 1842, but rebuilt afterwards.

During World War II, it was destroyed again; this time almost completely. Only the tower of the church was reconstructed.

Now, St. Nikolai is a memorial to remind of the horrors of war. Regular exhibitions take place in the church.

In 2005, a lift was built in the tower of St. Nikolai. As the tower has a height of 145 meters, the journey to the top of the tower is really worth it in order to enjoy the view of Hamburg.
