West of the Jungfernstieg, there is the famous square "Gänsemarkt".
Although it never was a market and had nothing to do with geese ("Gänse"), the Gänsemarkt has become quite popular within the course of time.
Now, there are many street cafes at the square. In addition, lots of events take place throughout the year.
Although the origin of the square dates back to the 17th century, its real history is not known. For example, the name Gänsemarkt referring to geese is not clear at all.
In the 17th century as well, an opera house was built at the Gänsemarkt. The statue of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing was set up in 1881.
