Built at the beginning of the 19th century, the Elbtunnel between St. Pauli and Steinwerder used to be one of the most modern tunnels of this period.
The construction works of the tunnel that was planned to connect the mainland with the Elbe island Steinwerder started in 1907. 4 years later, the 450 long tunnel was inaugurated. Although there also were bridges for the crossing of the Elbe, the Elbbrücken, they were too far away for workers to reach the dockyard
quickly.
Within the course of the years, the tunnel has become outdated and it is not possible for all ships to cross it. However, it is still passable for cars, bikes and on foot.
