Hamburg Places: Alsterarkaden

The Alsterarkaden at the "Kleine Alster" ("Small Alster") in Hamburg were built between 1842 and 1846 according to plans of the architect Alexis de Chateauneuf.

As most of the houses between the city hall and the "Binnenalster" had burnt down in the great fire in 1842, the entire area had to be rebuilt. In the course of this necessary reconstruction, the area was also redesigned following the example of Venetian houses and buildings. Alexis de Chateauneuf's colleagues Lindley and Schinkel took part in the planning of the redesign to a large extent as well.
